Project Overview
This compact courtyard garden in central Berkhamsted required a complete contemporary redesign. Through detailed consultation and design sharing with the client, we developed a plan to maximize the space while incorporating modern elements and practical growing areas.
The Brief
Transform a small Victorian courtyard into a contemporary garden space featuring:
Modern planting and vegetable growing areas
Dry stone wall effect cladding
Premium porcelain patio
Redesigned, user-friendly access steps
Clean, contemporary aesthetic
The Challenge
Working in period properties with limited access requires exceptional planning and care. Every aspect of the project - from soil removal to material delivery - had to be carefully managed through a narrow shared access way. This demanded meticulous organization and consideration for neighboring properties, demonstrating our expertise in handling logistically complex urban garden projects.
The Solution
We carefully executed each element of the design, creating defined spaces for both ornamental and kitchen garden areas. The new steps improved the garden's accessibility while enhancing its visual appeal. The combination of porcelain paving and dry stone effect cladding brought a contemporary feel while respecting the property's period character.
Client Notes
The final planting was completed by the client herself - the head gardener at Ashridge House - a testament to the quality of our groundwork and construction. We were particularly pleased to learn that this project came to us through recommendation, as the client had observed our work on another local project.
